Fishing on the Crozon peninsula

Fishing permits are not required in Brittany:
Everyone is entitled to fish with 2 rods and 1 lobster pot.

The coastal waters around the peninsula are habitat for a variety of well-known edible fish such as seabass. Seabass can be caught directly from the shore. It is also possible to fish from an ocean kayak, they can be hired in Morgat or at the port of Roscanvel. It is a unique experience kayaking the magnificent rocky coastline between Morgat and Cap de la Chèvre, which is abundant with many various species of fish. Paddling up the scenic coastline is so breathtaking, one often forgets about the fishing!

If you are lucky, you can end up with anything in the pan for your evening meal; sea bass, sea bream, pollock, mackerel, conger, sardines, just to name a few.
If you observe flocks of sea birds diving into the water, it is a sure sign that there are predatory fish around such as sea bass for example.
Finding good places to fish isn't easy. If you want to find the best locations, just observe the locals. The motto is simple: If you don't see a Breton out in his boat there's no fish to be caught!

Good Spots for Fishing
Goulien Beach (Anse de Dinan): Success is more likely mid-beach. Sea bass hunt here in the turbulent surf.

Rade de Brest - from Le Fret to the Naval School in Lanvéoc (Ecole Navale): Mackerel, sea bass, common ray and squid.

Morgat Harbour Wall: Mackerel and sea bass - good when the water is rising, shortly before high tide. During spring tides ( grande marée) ideal for squid.

Bay of Le Fret : Mackerel, sea bass, common ray and black sea bream.
Porz Kerguen:
To the left of the large rock it is possible to clamber over boulders to the water. This is a great spot for sea bass. Beware of the surf and breaking waves!

Pointe de Kerroux:
Between Pointe de Kerroux and La Palue beach there is a very steep rock where some anglers have mounted a make-shift wooden platform. This is a risky place to fish, it's 30 metres above the water and here the sea is rough and the tidal currents are strong. Nevertheless, some take the risk, for the sea bass here are big!

A wide selection of fishing equipment and bait is available from the sport shop opposite Leclercs.
The garden centre and DIY next to Lerclercs also has a selection of fishing tackle and accessories. Comptoir de la Mer at the port in Camaret probably has the best selection of all. The local fishermen sell live sand eels for bait at the port.
For bait, one can net shrimps at the boat mooring stages in Morgat or Camaret. Shellfish baits, worms and other baits can be dug at low tide on the beach at Morgat. Watch the locals closely if they go out in the mornings or evenings at the turn of the tide armed with a bucket or basket. Believe it or not, at spring tide, not many Bretons go shopping for fish or meat, they collect their food themselves on the beach!

Anyone who has no luck at fishing can purchase freshly landed fish directly from the boats
in Morgat or Camaret.

In Camaret-sur-Mer there are two "Viviers" (holding reservoirs for live lobster, crawfish and crab and sometimes scollops). Here you can choose your own lobster and even have it cooked for you.

In the village of Rostellec on the north coast of the peninsula, mussels and oysters are bred and offered for sale on the market place in Crozon in front of the church..
